amount: $1500

usage: Funds will go towards the purchase of a 8mm/Super8 film telecine machine which will be used to transfer films made for and submitted to this project. Models we are looking at range from $1200-1400. Any leftover funds will go towards promotion of site.

We are covering costs of film supplies, processing, tape, site development, video camera, and computer/software out of our own pocket.

timeline: Our goal is to launch our site in January 2007. We are committed to delivering weekly posts for one year.

Posts may range from 1-5 minutes in length dependent on content.

Our hope is to generate enough interest and participation to keep this project going indefinitely.

description: Small Film Project (working title) is an online resource dedicated to the education and exhibition of Super 8 and 8mm film.

The site will initially have three components. First, it will feature original posts from an ongoing film project by Aaron Valdez (aaronvaldez.com) under the working title Mini-Series.

Second, it will contain educational lessons and how-to videos on small gauge filmmaking by artist/educator Jennifer Proctor. These lessons will guide viewers through basics such as purchasing film and equipment to more advanced sessions on hand-processing and other experimental processes.

And finally, the site will feature posts from preservationists, artists, curators, scholars, and regular folks that have some connection to small-gauge filmmaking. Videos posted will include creative work, historical and educational films, home movies, and more. Using our backgrounds in personal filmmaking we will invite artists working in these film formats to contribute work.

Additionally, we will offer free film-to-video transfers to anyone in exchange for posting their work on our site. (This process will include the option of making the work available under Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial Share-Alike license.)

Our goal with this project is threefold: 1) To contribute to the preservation and exhibition of small gauge film, especially home movies and historical and educational films; 2) to provide a presence on the web for education about small-gauge filmmaking and unconventional film techniques—a niche that is currently unfilled in terms of video presentation and tutorials on the web; and 3) to create a collaborative community where artists and filmmakers can contribute work after learning from our tutorials, and in turn make their work available to others via a Creative Commons license.
